Expand your wine tastes and collection!

Discover Spanish wines. Many wines from places like Priorat and Ribera del Duero are priced outside the budgets of many consumers, but the country also offers some amazing values. For whites, look for wines made from the verdejo grape from Rueda; the slightly more expensive albarinos from Rias Baixas; and even the lively, crisp whites from Rioja, an area better known for its reds. As for reds, many Riojas (tempranillo) are great buys, as are the wines from Navarra, which are based mostly on tempranillo and garnacha (grenache). The reds from Montsant, Priorat’s neighbor, are also good buys, often under $20.

Don’t limit yourself to one color of wine. I have friends who say they drink only red wine. Trouble is, there are some foods that cry out for a white. If I pour an interesting white for those same friends, they usually find that they enjoy it. My red-wine- drinking neighbor has to admit that she enjoys a zesty rosé during the summer. And I know very few people who will decline a glass of sparkling wine. Which brings me to my next suggestion:

Don’t wait for a holiday to pop open a bottle of bubbly.
