Travel smart and save money!

At the end of April, some girlfriends and I will be perusing SLO for some wineries, new and old, a few cheap eateries, and a new place to stay. During these tough economic times, it’s OK to want to get away for a mini-vacation. I can’t emphasize enough that doing research online is the best way to get a great deal. Generally the best deals are through the establishments themselves, and you’ll always save more money at your choice of hotel/b&b if you go during the week (Sunday through Thursday nights). Check out mass travel websites too as they can offer seasonal specials, but most places do offer some sort of discount during the week and the off-season. Other cash saving ideas:

  • Most, if not all, wineries charge for tastings. If you buy a bottle of wine, sometimes they will include that in the price or dock it off your total. Either way, I recommend that you simply share a tasting. You’ll save $5 to $10, and be sober for a little bit longer.
  • Check local Chambers of Commerce websites for special deals, or call them and find out what they recommend. Chances are they know who needs business the most and who can offer the best deal.
  • When going to dinner, go to the bar during happy hour instead. You’ll still be able to sample the delicious food and revel in the atmosphere while keeping some cash in your pocket.
  • If you have Triple A, see if the hotel/b&b you’re staying at offers an auto club discount. Chances are they do, and you can save 10 to 15 percent.

All of my girlfriends and I are on a strict budget so it’s important to me to be able to have fun, get work done, and experience all that SLO has to offer while still being watchful of my cash flow. I encourage you to do your research and plan ahead so you can still have fun and not feel guilty about spending a little cash to soothe your soul!

  1. Yeah! Thanks for the tips! I will be using them when planning our next trip (whenever that may be). Keep them coming.
