Spotlight – Kynsi Winery

A required stop every time I’m in the Edna Valley, the Kynsi Winery is one of my favorite spots to visit when I’m in the Arroyo Grande area. Located in a refurbished barn and surrounded by tranquil fields, to be near their tasting room is to experience the sought after relaxation and peace. The wine tasting room almost always has a few other eager visitors, anxious to try the wine and chat with the pourer.

Each time I’ve visited, I have been impressed with the friendliness and professionalism of the staff. They are enthusiastic and passionate about this small winery. My favorite wine is the 2007 Pinot Blanc“Pear blossom, white peaches and honeydew combine with crisp green apple and meyer lemon meringue with a delicate, clean finish.” (An excellent pair with chicken and light vegetables, spicy hummus, etc.) The other wine that I enjoy is the 2005 Zinfandel – “Black cherry, cassis and sandstone introduce the senses and are emphasized by a succulent mouth feel of dried thyme, white chocolate, raspberry jam and sweet pipe tobacco.” (Very good paired when paired with red meat or dark chocolate.)

An interesting side note about Kynsi Winery. Their label features the resident barn owl who lives in the old barn near the winery. “Kynsi” is Finnish for Talon.

I highly recommend that you visit this charming winery next time you are in town! And when you do, please let me know what you thought and which wines you enjoyed.
